If he was a mechanic, perhaps these were replacement caps for something on the interior of the plane, the seats maybe. Think screw covers...

That was my first thought too. I actually have a few of the brass Pan Am uniform buttons that I got at the same sale.

I did find a piece of luggage with a similar attachment on it. The piece is new though , not vintage but perhaps there were some original pieces made like this too.
