Shoe buckle?
Dug this up over the weekend in southwest NJ. To help date the area, also dug up that day was an 1857 Flying Eagle Penny, some Indian pennies and Buffalo nickels. Dime is included for both scale and to show possible discoloration as they came from the same ground.

That one kind of looks like a modern belt buckle.

It would be for a very thin belt then. I don't think the reverse has a notch for where the long piece would go. I'll check it again.

Too small for a shoe buckle. Maybe horse equipment?

While I have aimed in my postings to be irenic and conciliatory, rather than polemic, I have yet endeavored to set forth the
truth, let it favor or impugn whom it might. Any notice of misrepresentations or mistakes occurring in these prose will be most thankfully received

DCMatt, horse equipment may ring true. Perhaps a buckle from the head harness? On a previous hunt on this property I found a lynchpin, which suggests a horse-drawn carriage or cart.

relicmeister, from my memory, I think it rang up as pull tab or slightly lower. I can check again.

Looks brass should ring a litter higher.
