Iron object found at French and Indian War fort site

Hello fellow TNetters! Hope everyone had happy holidays! So the other day I was out detecting with Bob and Paul at this fort site, and I got this signal, and saw something copper on the ground, so I grabbed it and this huge thing popped out of the snow! Its iron, except for the end, which I think may be a low-grade silver (I can see some peeking out, I'm going to get it tested) which had pieces of wood in it. It is approximately 2.5 feet long, and the end piece is about 4-4.5". We've all been clueless to its identity/purpose, and that is what I'm look to find. The hanging pieces are freely movable, and it is definitely hand forged. Thank you for your help in advance! -Anthony

Google "horse hame". It goes on the collar of a horse harness. The wood has completly rotted away from yours, but I don't believe its that old.

With the square nut, it is probably from mid nineteenth century to early twentieth century.

Wow thanks, that was fast, and totally accurate! I don't think that is a nut, but part of that piece itself. Either way it's still old. Thanks!
