Found this today while digging a top to a soda can. Didn't know what it was at first and just threw it in the bag. After cleaning it at home, I discovered it is a whistle. Looked on ebay and found a couple like it, but nothing of a rabbit. Made of porcelain. And about 2 1/4" long and 1 1/2" wide.
I think it might be whistle lost by a rabbit hunter, to call dogs not rabbits. I use the a
3 in one call (distress jackrabbit, cotton and a coaxer) when hunting coyotes. Do I eat them? Ever heard if coyote pie? j/k............
I don't think it's a dog whistle Ant.I have never saw a dog whistle looking like that,plus a dog whistle is very high pitched and silent to the human ear.It could be one of two whistles.One could be for hunting,called a fox whistle for hunting foxes, if it imitates the sound of a rabbits' distress call.But I doubt that it would actually be shaped like a rabbit.lol .Two could be just an ordinary whistle in the form of a rabbit,which I think is more than likely.Nice item,great find!

Well, I have blown on it (no jokes Dekalb!!), and it sounds like a regular whistle, only higher pitched, but not so high that only dogs can hear it. Gypsy....tell me more about a pie whistle....never heard of this, but it could be?

When I am hunting rabbits and I have one on the run I just whistle real loud and 9 times out of 10 the rabbit will stop and look back at you...don't know why it does this but it does...could be used for actually hunting rabbits!

Your absolutely right about that! Just don't think a whistle made for hunting would be made of porcelain.Too easy to break,out in the field.

I thought about that for a minute and even looked at a few.Most are made to sit on top the pie and are sort of cone shaped.Not all but most. I think the whistle is sitting the wrong way for this application.Here's a photo of some pie birds/animals-

I've hunted behind lots of dog handlers that use regular sounding whistle. It's hard for the regular Joe to train a dog using an ultrasonic whistle. That’s because those whistle sound like your blowing air. I still think it's a hunting whistle.
When I'm hunting rabbits with a dog and a rabbit is jumped, I stay put. Because a rabbit being chased by a dog will run a circle and return almost in the same spot as he started. Then I take a shot, cottontails, swamprabbits and jacks are all the same, but the latter two make larger circles.

Your right,when training dogs alot of times a regular whistle will be used,that's more for the benefit of the human rather than the dog.I guess it doesn't matter now since PBK has correctly identified it as a regular whistle versus a hunting whistle.Porcelain and the field don't mix too well.It's delicate and breakable,more for a child or a woman if you ask me.Happy New Year.

Actually...the one on ebay was also found under a tree in the dirt...so they really dont know if its a childs toy or what yet.....although I think it might be

If you have ever seen a mounted fox hunter you might think twice about what a hunter will carry. I've seen rabbit hunters with elegant not practical gear too. It could be a toy that a hunter was using. I wonder how many porcelain/glass whistles where made as toys for kids? I'm just taking an educated guess like everyone else.

I think so. I've seen antique ones too, most resemble duck calls. In order to call in a yote a mile away it takes a full breath or air to make the sounds. I'll go take a look over at Varmint Al's page I think he has a few in his collection.
