    Brass button info

Can anyone identify this brass button I dug up today?
    Years produced?
    Civil War item possibly?
    Union or Confederate?
    Value?
It says "Skovills Extra Superfine" on the back.
If not Civil War, were these buttons used on civilian clothing as well?
    Thanks for any info.

    Re: Brass button info

MM - I use this to judge the dates of the back marks, here is the Scovills marks, your button proves pre-CW like Daniel in AK stated...

    LEVENWORTH, HAYDEN & SCOVILL 1811-1827
    J.M.L. & W.H. SCOVILL 1827-1840
    SCOVILLS 1827-1840
    SCOVILLS & CO. 1840-1850
    SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO. 1850-1960
    SCOVILL Mg. Co. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mg. Co. / WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865
    SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mfg Co. WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865

The "extra superfine" is supposed to indicate a highest quality button.

Nice find... older than you thought! I'm sure you can look forward to more awesome finds in that area you have been posting about!

    Re: Brass button info

Thanks guys for the info. The house on the property I'm searching was built in 1936. I'm going to have to find out what was on the property before that with these kinds of 1830's-1850's finds.
Makes me wonder who's buried in the cemetery there, and how old it really is? No headstones.
    Thanks,
    MM
