Did you dig this? Have it tested.

it was on the bottom of a steep 10' cliff of exposed rock and soil, cut for an access road. I recon it likely worked its way loose from the hillside over time. Needless to say, in Gold Country. But also, an area familiar with fires. Without giving the spot away completely, there are old mines nearby and nuggets are sometimes found by treasure hunters and casual observers.

You are located in the right spot for that to be gold. My heart would be way up in my throat. What does your detector say it is?
Due to the high price of ammunition there will be no warning shot.

VDI was a solid +77 on my MXT Pro.

Sorry it was not gold, but looking on the positive side, at least you have a cool paperweight! I wish I had thought to ask you to rub it and then smell your fingers. Brass has a very distinctive odor; try it on a brass key and then on your nugget.

Bummer, the 77 on the MXT is high for gold, but I was still hoping for you.

Dang- I was pulling for you MPG. Brass melts around 1700 degrees so one would have to wonder what melted it. Next one, and there will be a next one.
