    Sewing or weaving item??

    A non metal treasure:

My wife picked this thing up at a garage sale last summer and we still have no idea what it is. Almost everything on it is made of wood including the "gears" that the handle meshes with. The handle glides through a little track in the base and as it goes through it turns the "gears" you see sticking out of the side. The handle will slide in either direction through the base. Any ideas?

Here's a 60% sure guess. On a spinning wheel the operator has to manually position the yarn on a series of hooks attached to a flyer with a bobbin inside. The fancier wheels have an automatic system to move the incoming yarn back and forth as the wheel turns (just like a bass fishing reel). I think yours may be something along that order.

Something is being woven...threads go through the eyelets ....cogs make weaving action take place ....spool rods in the holes.......so is it some type of lace making or ribbon making device?

I agree with Charlie - some kind of spinning wheel flyer.

That's a pretty stripped "parlor" wheel. I'm thinking for the larger full fize wheels.

Here's a modern auto indexer that would fit that Asford you show.

I built my wife one of these from an Ashford kit and it is considered a "miniature" wheel:

I believe that is a shuttle and shuttle drive for an automatic loom. The drive units were made in small pieces so they could vary the with of the piece being woven.

It appears to be a Thread or Wire Twister.

Showed your photos a my gf and she said it was not part of any spinning wheel she is aware of. She is a pro spinner and often works on various wheels for people, some of them really strange. Her best guess was something for weaving, but didn't really know.

OK. I'm beat. But maybe this will help redeem me.

This was purchased at an open-air antique market. It is a shuttle for a ribbon weaving loom. The Shuttle looks to be in very good condition.
