    ST. MICHAEL

I have run the course in researching this pendant. I'll tell you what I know. "S:MICHAELI*ARCHANG*SIGNUM*ONFRATERNITAT:" I believe this translates: ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL, SIGN(symbol or token) OF FRATERNITY(brotherhood). There is an "F" top and bottom on the cross, and a "P" left and right.

On the other side, St. Michael stands with staff and one foot on the dragon. There is a "B" at 7 o'clock encircled by the dragon's tail and the "P" again on the flowing coat tail at 3 o'clock. Pewter or silver.

I have viewed many modern St. Michael medalions and none have as much detail or apparent symbolism as this. Finding answers to the questions of the monograms would certainly bring an understanding of the original intent, and makes me wonder why, if so important to begin with with, have they been deleted today. Found at an 1820-1850's site. Thanks for looking.

I've found a lot of madalions that look similar to yours (not st michaels) but, the same metal comp. etc. and most are from the early 1800s (the ones I've found anyway). I even have one that has a date of 1832 on it.

ST. Michael is the patron saint of police and a protector in general as an archangel, nice piece.

Thanks for the info. Just thought I'd post this in case someone might have a clue to the meaning of the " F , P , and B " that appears on the pendant. It is an interesting piece , as are your comments.

Thanks again for the replies and for having a look.

My advice- find an old priest and ask him. He will better translate the Latin and may know the symbolism.
