    Horse or wagon-related?

I found this yesterday in a creek that runs through a plantation that was very active in the 18th century. The long bar is convex on one side and flat on the other; it's 18 inches long. There was originally a loop at both ends but one has broken off.

    Ideas?

Thanks for the reply. How was it used, and do you know the approximate age of yours?

It's part of a hames. There is a crease in the horse collar that the hames fits in. The collar protects the horse, the hames takes the load.
