Dug shotshell headstamp - some help, please

    Dug a shotshell headstamp fragment.

    It reads:

    U.M.C. Co
    No 12
    HIGH BASE

    How OLD is it??

I checked out several websites that I normally use to date these relics, no help...,
but, this one is the first of its kind I've encountered, in over ten years detecting.

    many thanks!!

Head and primer appear to be the same metal (non-magnetic). Brass height is medium-high with no design around the outside. 1896-1900 C 5 04-25-2014 This date range comes from original UMC catalogs. I know very little about this line of shells.

I still keep tossing those things I have dug so many. People keep telling me to keep em, but I don't see the point?

The site above will help you match the style to the date. 1896 to 1900 if it is as you describe.

America was founded by tough hell-raisers. Rugged citizens who evaded taxes, spoke strongly against tyranny, grew tobacco, brewed beer, distilled spirits, and smuggled weapons. And it will be saved by those same types of citizens.

    Thanks, I will.
Often, you know, it might be the lowly shotshell head, that might be THE only way to date the use of the site...!

    Whoa!
Thanks very much for the info!!
    (love this forum!)

Cartridge collectors will most of the time, won't consider retaining the beat-up fragment of a rare shell,
unless there isn't an example..., ANYWHERE!

...to me, this relic tells a story - and adds to the whole picture of that point in time....

I have a quart jar that won't hold any more headstamps, I'm just waiting for them to become the next big thing to collect. The same goes for those porcelain discs from old mason jar lids, I call them porcelain dollars (fingers crossed). My wife calls it hoarding.
