    ...sounds/looks good to me. Can you see a way (barbs, peening) the thing would stay attached ?

    Nope, they might have corroded off, the only thing I can see is the long line at the top.

    It appears to be a sling tip for the US M1 Carbine sling. This style tip was used after WWII. Made of brass and blackened so as not to reflect glare.
