I wonder if it might be the outer cover for a bottle in a vanity set. Often bottles had a plain snug fitting glass stopper and an ornate metal cover that matched other accessories in the set.

Ummm...I wasn't describing a finial, Blaze. this example of mine has a threaded cover but not all of them did. The green and blue guilloche/enamelling would be added to the back of a brush, mirror, button hook handle, lid of powder jar etc. in order to form a set of various objects that all had a commonality. I'm suggesting that perhaps the found object is the covering embellishment on a perfume bottle that was part of a similarly designed vanity set.Click image for larger version.

A finial or hip-knob is an element marking the top or end of some object, often formed to be a decorative feature..

Ok, I understand what you're describing and I've got a bottle or two that have what can be called a finial. I've not come across anyone in the perfume bottle collector "world" call these covers finials though, they're usually called caps regardless of how plain or ornate they are.

I think this dates to at least early 1800s based on all other relics I have been finding there.

Can you clean the gunk out of it and show us another picture? Maybe there are traces of wood or something that might help in identification.

Cool. It sure could be a pommel or a knob handle from a walking stick.
