    Encrusted Pirate Coin

Ok, found this tonight in a deep cut at the beach in the OBX.

I'm 95% sure this is one of those tourist doubloon souvenirs. I have seen a number posted over the last couple of years. I'm guessing this is my first.

    So here it is...

The one side is really encrusted, hard to budge even a single grain of sand even after soaking in hot soapy tap water. I probably could chip the crust off with a screw driver.

    What do y'all think?

It may not be a fantasy coin. There are a ton of Roman designs out there. It is not totally uncommon to find Roman coins on US soil. Between, kids, lost collections and coins that were in ships' ballast dumped long after the Roman era, it is very possible to find some. I have found two to date near a port in New Jersey.

Actually Ive read a book or two with the suggestions that at one point there were romans,Phoenician, traders here.Whether by design or accident by being blown off course.A roman oil lamp was found in a indian shell mound in Massachusetts.

Was able to pry off the encrustations.

I believe it is an official, 100% accurate, Escudo-Doubloon, replica souvenir with the gold paint worn off... Base metal appears to be some kind of pewter.

I guess I can scratch another bottom of the bucket lister "coin" off my list!

Has anyone ever dug an authentic Graveyard of the Atlantic shipwreck coin from the beach?
