    2 piece Gilded Button strange design

    Hello Just found these 2 buttons

    haven't cleaned yet, its still drying out

    just wondering if anyone can Id large one, its gilded, 2 piece the design is strange

    I’d guess it to be a 1830’s-40’s, the “golden age” of gilt buttons, many of which had geometric patterns like this one. But seeing the backmark, or at least part of it, would help confirm this.

    The other button is interesting to me.
    My wife does all the driving, I just hold the steering wheel.

    I’d guess that small one to be a Jacksonian waistcoat or vest button missing the outer rim.

    here they are cleaned up
    the the 2 piece has W. Robinson with banner and Eagle facing left

    the other has no back attachment and the edge is intact as you can see gilding
    on my magnifyer it has 16 stars around a big star ?

    the tiny piece was found 8" away from 2 piece button

    That backmark was used from 1834-1848. They made both military and civilian (like yours) buttons. The picture below shows other examples of the geometric designs popular in that era, as well as some of the floral designs.
    The small button is from about the same time, considered a “Jacksonian cousin” as described at the link below. I believe it would have had a rim around it as do the examples shown there.     the Jacksonian cousin has Guilding on outer rim, maybe it had a recess and thin connection to original rim
