Anybody ever seen one of these?

I know it's a lamp of some sort, just aint never seen one like this before. Anyone know what in particular this one would be used for. It's about 10 inches tall with a handle and another wire for hanging it up or something I guess. The bottom is about 5 inches in diameter. Looks crude and maybe handmade. Bottom photo is a close-up of the wick. It is about 1 inch in diameter. It was in an old barn.

I was thinking that it may be a "lighter" for a smudge pot, which is what your referring to, but I think it's a little small. Here is a photo of a guy holding one. ?

Kind looked familiar, like something we used to keep the mosquitos & flies off the milk cows along time ago. was called a smudge pot lantern. Found a pretty close fit with a R.R. smudge pot lantern on eBay. Found in barn also seemed like a clue. nice relic diggummup.

All the ones i've seen have been made out of brass though. This one is rusted metal. The bottom had a layer of black "smudge" on it, I cleaned some of it off to try and find a mark of some kind.

Using a piece of paper, rub over the mark with a soft pencil...it may be more visible
