It reminds me of this tag also from western, PA. It looks like I thought it was maybe a carriage or buggy tag but I don't think that was confirmed for certain--

    Found this tag,any ideas?

Agreed, and like some of the examples shown in that thread, the top number may indicate the number of horses.

I have seen similar ones of these before, although in NY off old Fire Tenders and Pumpers the top number "4" was the number of the fire engine (horse pulled of course)

    And station number in middle."157"

PGH is the acronym for Pittsburgh and Fox Chapel Volunteer Fire Department Station 157

Might be worth contacting them and see how long they have been around there ?

Looks like the Fox Chapel station formed in 1953. Fox Chapel is about 20 miles as the crow flies from the site I found the badge. Usually the relics I find from the 1800’s around here are very neighborhood centric. Thx

I have to agree with Huntindog and Organicseekers, it definitely resembles some sort of Fire department emblem, tag, badge or insignia especially having the "Florian Cross" shape, which is indicative of most FD symbols, emblems, badges and so on... "D"

It's a beautiful looking badge, but it definitely looks older than 1953?
The date of 1898 seems much more likely... unless it's some sort of a commemorative plate?

I wonder what the #4 at the top represents?

Very cool badge Thad. There is a chance that 1898 is some type of serial number and not a date. I'm sure you will get an accurate ID on it.
