I'm hoping that I am wrong but it looks like an old sink drain stopper to me. I'm probably wrong.

Check for a check valve. The taper part at the top is the check, the long lower part on the bottom is the guide and weight.

Thank you. At least I've got an idea of where to go to try and identify it.

Once I was pointed in the right direction it was easy. Seems it's most likely a presssure relief valve for a steam engine. https://www.farmcollector.com/steam-...of-old-boilers

Too heavy for that and the area it was found in is very remote and rugged. I doubt someone would have carried a sink stopper that far. After quite a bit of research it is most likely a pressure relief valve from a steam engine of some type, locomotive, etc. These RR tracks were here well before the civil war so it could be related to that period. It was about the same depth I'm finding a lot of civil war bullets.

The hole in the top could have been for a spring, meaning that it could have been a pop off valve. Steam engines do have those.

A guide rod goes in the hole and also inside a spring that puts pressure on the top of the valve. Pressure from the tank side of the valve forces it open.
