A relative visited Oaxaca quite some years ago and claimed to have gotten from some shop somewhere.

To me, it looks like a piece of Mayan fresco that has been hacked off a tomb or a cave wall from an ancient Mayan ruin somewhere.

"The Maya civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization developed by the Maya peoples, and noted for its logosyllabic script— the most sophisticated and highly developed writing system in pre-Columbian Americas — as well as for its art, architecture, mathematics, calendar, and astronomical system."

The stone looks like a green serpentine, which is some what soft and easy to carve. Though I can't say for sure, my gut says it's a modern made tourist item. To me the carved relief figure just doesn't look right or ancient in style. There is a forum on this site for Central American artifacts and maybe they would be helpful also.

I been to Mexico a few times. I got me a burnt leather copy of a couple rubbings from Mayan friezes.

Your piece does not appear Mayan to me. Too many curves where it should be square-ish.

I'm not familiar with Aztec though.

how those holes were drilled will tentatively give you a lot of information about the age of the piece.
