Any clock people out there ? 400 year old clock ???

ok, i know it is a grandfather clock, but dont kniw anything about ut. it came from family estate, and i have been told it is 400-500 years old.

Any info / help / possible value would be nice to know. Its rough, and is strapped to the wall with a metal strap so it doesnt fall over. its over 7 ft tall. No clue what to do with it.

Can you get a pic of the back? Is the case made of pine?

cant get a very good pic, nervous about removing it without help. It might be pine, i am not sure. The back looks like a solid piece of wood.

I saw one very much like that in an antique shop and the dealer said it was a later 19th century reproduction of some earlier style.

No, its not 400ys old. Pendulum clocks were invented late 1600ies and did not see wiedspread use until the 1700ies.

The style is eclectic: Frame around the face seems somwhat roccoco, face w/ roman numerals and pendulum itself kinda of classicism or directoire. Plain case doesnt fit none of the styles and may be a later addition.

Imho late 19th or early 20th century clock in "fancy style" that was liked these days. Rather older, since I have a S&R catalog of 1907 and there ar no more gtandfather clokcs forsale -> seems to have run out of fashion earlier in the US.

Solid quality if still runs today! Wouldnt surprise me if the work is is belgian or northern french, they did made these things for export.

Nice family heirloom! Iwould hold on to it.

What can I add here that hasn't already been said?

The clocks movement will help to date this piece. But if pressed for a date, I'd say second quarter of the 19thc.
It was originally a wall hanging clock that has been later put into a pine case, which looks to date to the 1920s.
The cast metal portion surrounding the clock face was probably repainted at the same time.

I'm thinking the clock is probably french.

Well I was talkimg with another family memeber who told be that it used to have a lot of painted features on the case, wheat and ribbons and such, and back about 80 years ago my grandmother sanded it down and refinished it. What she knew of it, it was brought from Germany by my great ×? great grandparents circa 1750s and had already been in the family a while then. I am going to get some help to pull it down today and take a closer look.

It doesnt look that old, but seems thats what the story on it is, so going to try to find markings on it, and take a closer look at construction.

I think its funny how once something ia in the family a while, it magically ages faster than possible haha.
