What does the inside look like? It looks like it is embedded in a hillside. If there is an iron pipe through the buried end, then it could be a spring fed water tank for livestock. More pictures might help.

Yep looks like an old cattle tank... most are fed by a pond or spring. Some closer to the house may have a hydrant nearby.

    Livestock watering trough?
America was founded by tough hell-raisers. Rugged citizens who evaded taxes, spoke strongly against tyranny, grew tobacco, brewed beer, distilled spirits, and smuggled weapons. And it will be saved by those same types of citizens.

It looks like there may have been a hand pump located on the left side of the trough.
If it is only 2' deep, then it's a livestock water trough.... other wise maybe a cistern?

    Great looking stone work.

My last place had an old milk house next to the barn.
Had a concrete tub just like that one!
The house was built in 1862.
With that said, if you want help recovering those tasty rusty relics.. I'm your guy.
    Looks like an amazing opportunity.
I wish you the best of luck.
May you pull a 20$ Double Eagle!
    One tip.. Please.
Please be exceptionally aware of your surroundings!
Old wells are often covered with old (long rotted) boards, which are now covered with leaves and other stuff that Mother Nature provides.
Please, don't learn this lesson the hard way!
Check and check again for Wells before you haphazardly wander around in the woods.
    Be safe! Happy Hunting.

Great advice for all of us who detect these old and often rural sites Mike!

I saw on Oak Island they uncovered a concrete wall and threw the idea around that it might be Roman concrete. Wouldn't that be something.

If there was a source of volcanic ash within 500 miles that might even have been remotely possible.
