    J. Hamburger N. Y.

Hello All. I found this old stencil folded up near a long gone home site in Central FL. There is a 1930's house there now and I believe the earlier home was 1890's vintage.

It is clearly "J. HAMBURGER N. Y." and the maker is "LOUIS LEONHARDT 225 WASHINGTON ST. N.Y."

I have found stencils like this one in the past and have always been unsuccessful in finding out more about the addressees. I see info re Mr. Lenohardt but nothing for this "HAMBURGER" person...but with a name like "HAMBURGER" someone's gotta know something right?

Thanks for the view any any info. Good luck out there. C9

Ironically it appears to be on the same street as louis... The phone # is the part on the stencil. Diff than the ad, but close.

Hello Bigcypresshunter and ctalmadg. Nice, that is some interesting info.

So J. Hamburger and the J. Hamburger Co. were involved in the medical and semi-pro sports professions in NYC c. 1864 and 1920 respectively. Also the entire stencil is revealed as "J. HAMBURGER B4684 N.Y." and the J. Hamburger Co. was just up the street from the stencil maker Louis Leonhardt.

Thanks very much for the replies and excellent research. Good Luck out there. C9

I'm having some trouble with the photos, but basically this guy, and his companysold fruits and vegtables in Manhattan.
He, and his company, were on washington St.
I found a Deland Fl. newspaper article that talked about him buying oranges down there, so that explains the Fl. connection.

Hello ToastedWheatie. That sounds about right. The property where I found the stencil could very well have been part of an orange grove / fruit company...I am finding a lot of iron farm stuff and there was a water tower on the property too...mostly subdivision houses now around it now.

Thanks for the reply and great info. Good Luck out there. C9
