Flat button Treble Gilt 5 stars with eagle found in Rhode Island

My wide dug up this brass button that is flat and smooth on the front and on the back it shows...Treble Gilt 5 stars and a laurel leaf. Would love to know the time frame and usage. My house was built in the 1760's. Thanks, Tom

All these flat buttons with treble/double gilt; rich orange, superior orange (and all variants thereof) are an early English (London to be exact) mass export dating in the first half of the 19th century (some say even from 1780 onwards).
In your case, treble gilt means that the button was supposed to have three coats of (fire) gilding.

Yeah, welcome from my side, too.

The find is nice and keeper. Depending on area, you´ll acquire a small collection of these eventually, some even with motifs on the front and maybe with traces of the gilding.

Wow, thanks for the fast responses, you guys are awesome! I thought I read somewhere on the net that the Americans put an eagle on their buttons to distinguish themselves from the Brits. Any truth to that?

The Eagle was used on both sides of the pond.
The button manufactures of the early English flat buttons thought it gave them a patriotic flair and would sell more buttons.
After the revolution Americans weren't to keen on anything English.

Forget to mention the Eagle that is facing to his right

I forgot to mention that it has a right facing Eagle above the 5 stars. I thought it might be American made. And thanks for the welcoming messages, you guys are inspiring!
