    Any idea what this may be or went to? Got permission to hunt 83 acres of woods. Found it in area littered with square nails. A few hundred yards away found five flat buttons including a large dandy button and a piece of shoe buckle frame.

    I'd be interested to know what part of the country you found this in?
    Due to the amount of corrosion on the iron, to me it almost looks like either fertilizer of animal urine damage.
    It might also be a high alkaline level of the soil in your area.

    A pH value above 7.0 indicates that the soil is alkaline, with higher values representing increasing alkalinity."

    Southern Maryland. Most copper coins I find are very corroded. Maryland soil is not kind to copper or iron. I highly suspect the area I found it in was a farm or animal pasture.
