Looks like a Revolutionary War period shoe buckle frame. What is the word on the back, can you tell?

That's a very interesting piece. After the Revolutionary War General Washington had celebrity status among the colonists and that status grew as time went on. His presidency only came around because of a massive grassroots efforts by citizens and friends working to convince him to run. Numerous people wrote him letters imploring him to accept the position and when he finally did, and was elected, there was tremendous celebration in the 13 states. My guess is that this shoe buckle was probably made during the time between 1787-1789 when the public fervor was at it's highest and also before shoe buckles of that style were out of fashion. Based on the design it was hand-engraved and was likely a special order for someone. I'm sure it was a conversation piece in it's day since political buttons and cufflinks were much more common. Definitely a unique find and well worthy of display!

Yes, and Paleomaxx has some very good observations. I have not seen one like that but it was probably made during the Constitutional Period, as he described. Washington was very, very popular!

Pretty amazing and historical piece. I haven't seen anything calling him by General Washington. I would look for that missing piece and if I couldn't find it I would have it restored for sure. Much more rare than most GW buttons (especially as a whole) and should have some good value even in the condition it is now.

nice buckle, was it found any where near this land description
an interesting read 1st pres, had a hard time getting land title

Washington’s land in Kentucky was located south of Louisville in what
is now Grayson County, Kentucky. This parcel, about 5400 acres, was
situated a short distance west from the mouth of Short Creek (now Spring Fork),
on both sides of Hites Falls, about twelve miles from the “Falls of Rough.”

He didn't have to make it, just someone who supported him as it's a patriotic item like the buttons. A cufflink button was posted recently which is the same idea. Shame it's not complete but still a great find.
