Found a 4” x 6” x 2” plastic box in the woods today. Rang up as iron, opened it and had a mini heart attack. There were 100+ of these thin concave disks. Any idea what they are?

Also saw an unusual pair mounted to a tree in the park woods. (Zoom in on the red in the center of the photo...)

i cant give you an ID, but I can tell you they are not electric box knockouts. These are much too thin for that, although they do look a lot like steel based

I've dug the old style ant posin cans they nailed to trees years ago. They look to maybe be the tops of the small cans. Some here are too young to remember those.

In the day of paper signs like "no trespassing" they were made of heavy paper and many used these disks to put the nail through to secure them to a tree or such.

Do they tap the trees in your area for maple sap production?
These may have something to do with attaching the hose or sap buckets to the trees.

I’m sure there are loads of maple trees in these woods, but have not seen any tapping action there. Doesn’t mean that they were tapping a decade ago.

This area of the park was purchased 10 years ago by the township. A type of washer for hammering Posted signs sounds like a good hypothesis. The box was found about 10’ in from the road, typical area for mounting these signs.

Looks like someone has been doing some tapping of another sort under the tree... and keeping score!

Yeah, I’ll have to go back in a couple of months to see if the score has increased on that tree...
