Can anyone help with wood carving

If anyone can help with what the carvings are on this or what type of wood it is appreciated. Two fish with water coming out of mouth and a ring around tail Also Iím not sure if this was a mirror to begin with or made into one from something else?? Reminds me of Viking or Celtic.....it had a label but it is no use

    Ah, I love it!

Can't help with the wood, but your fish look like the Heraldic style Dolphin. The design with the swirls at the mouth and the strange pipes/spouts that the water flows from - interesting!

Ehhh ok ok.... JT... your mirror is IMO...

To me this looks like Old India Sheesham wood.

The sticker / tag even furthers my belief in this.

BUT... do not get discouraged IF I am correct... I know that the whole India made thing might de-value this in your mind.

BUT (again)... in this case... you are right as rain.

This IS the type of pieces that are sought after and will fetch decent money.

    And it is old.

I am thinking at least 100 + years.

I’m with AARC. Stylistically, it’s typical for late Victorian baroque revival and would have been made as a mirror. Could be from India or Ceylon (now Sri-Lanka) and this kind of carving is sometimes generically known as “Ceylon Ware”, whether actually from Ceylon or not, because it was the largest exporter of carved wooden items in local woods made to suit decorative tastes in the west.

I think those are stylised dolphins in baroque form… a bit like this:

Here’s something larger in similar style (unattributed origin) which might have been a wall mirror or the back section of a dresser. Often these things were stained and varnished to give them the desired appearance of other woods since ‘dark’ furniture was very much in vogue at the time. This this one has been stripped back to the original wood.

Thanks guys........I thought it was older by all the handling marks at the back on the top of the wood and also thought made into a mirror from the wood being different type

This thing could be older... but my carbon dating tank is empty. :P

    It would not surprise me.

I am thinking 1880's at earliest... but hey who knows...

and I base this "guess" on absolutely zero absoluteness. heh

    But hey...

    Whadaya want for free. :P

I was thinking it might have been on the back of a wild west bar called, "Salon Decor?" But I see an Eagle Head in the second photo down on the upper right.
