I just dug this a few moments ago, in my pasture. I haven't cleaned it yet but was going to go run down the street and hit my permission really quickly, as it poured last night.

I can see some detail on it but nothing definitive yet. It has some raised bumps or stars around the outside front edge and there is some raised design on the front but I can't see what it is yet.

Maybe I should have cleaned it before posting but I didn't want to ruin it.

Found in south Louisiana on my farm.

    Thank you.

It's kind of hard to tell from the picture that posted but, I'd say that it is possibly a Pelican button. Can you post a better picture?

Looks like an eagle on the front to me. Its a hollow button, so be careful to not let your cleaning or what not make it fall apart.

I just got home and looked at the button after it has sat for a few hours and it looks like a bird to me also. The back appears all copper but the front looks like copper and another metal. Do you think it would hurt it to put it in warm peroxide for a minute or so?

I'll post better photos but it may have to be tomorrow because my phone is being held back a grade for acting up. It does look like a bird though. Any idea on age with that type of construction. I guess it would have to be a cuff button, correct?

Thanks for taking a stab at it. I will update.

Stars around, it wings down. Two Piece with shank which probably makes it Civil War period. I would not use any chemicals on it. Take a toothpick and gently try to lightly scratch away some of the debris. If you use any acid it will get ruined within minutes. I should know...it could be a Confederate local, maybe officer's button but right now I can't tell.

Oh, I measured it with my calipers (which I just got and am not great at) and it is a little over 14mm.

Oh my gosh, Smokey. You are amazing. I have Andre's pencils but I've never really used them. Civil War? I am stoked! Thank you all so much! Should I put spit or something on it? Just joking but it seems to need moisture.

Yes, cuff button size. That's the most common size of cuff button. Be extremely careful with it. Sometimes they disintegrate when you handle them...I know all about that one too! I' have had three go "poof" on me!

Agreed and the droop wings style of the face leads me to believe it is post CW possibly Indian Wars if not later.

I am trying hard to get some detail but I am unsure what I am "toothpicking" and I don't want to ruin the button. Can I soak it in olive oil or put something o n it so I can get more detail and then maybe work with it?

Any oil or something moist I may have around the house?

Sorry for being a pest, buy I really want to see what this button is.

Can you get any detail on the back? Any kind of writing on the back could help

I want to let you all know that it IS a Marine Corp, Indian War era cuff button. I can't see any writing on the back, but am able to make out the anchor on the front and other details which confirm it's identity.

Thanks to all of you who contributed your time and knowledge. It's the first military button I have ever dug. Hopefully, there will be more to come.

Congrat's to you on the find of the Marine Corps cuff button. Very nice indeed. Maybe there will be more to be found in your pasture.
