    Newbie here please help!

    Hi all

I am completely new to this type of hobbie and couldn’t help but pick something up on the way back from the beach, the tide was out meaning I was able to see this and pick it up. THIS MAY WELL BE A STONE. However I just found it too intriguing and would like some confirmation. It is slightly irregular shape with an indentation, otherwise would be a perfect round ball, along with to small holes. I thought at first was it a musket ball but I think it’s too heavy. Any confirmation would be brilliant, it was just one of those finds I thought I’d be intrigued to find out.

does a magnet stick to it? is it hard like stone or soft like lead? maybe it's a fishing weight or just a stone rounded by the surf.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Sam! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) - members may have more success helping you (your location may help, etc.)...
2nd - I moved ya from GENERAL DISCUSSION over to WHAT IS IT? for more exposure.

Chert Nodule .... Micro-crystalline Quartz / Silicon Dioxide. This one possibly once used as ship's ballast at sea and may have originated from England. That's my guess. Go back and look around you will probably find more (bigger or smaller). Fun to tumble. You never know what you will find once you remove the coating.Click image for larger version.

Yeah it’s hard like stone, haven’t tried a magnet to be honest. So I can give that a go.
