    Crotal Bell

    Hello Tnet,

Found this crotal Bell some time ago. As you can see it is broken. The material is probably bronze and the width must have been about 2 centimeters, The weight is 6 grams. Object is found in the Netherlands. Anybody knows from what time period this comes ?

The hole at the top of the bell seems somewhat crudely drilled in, so it could very well be 18th century or older. 19th century crotal bells tend to have a top that is more uniform.

I agree. At least 18th century and possibly 17th century.

I find a lot of crotal bells here in Canada, mostly on old homestead & farm field sites.
I wish the bells I find were as old as the ones you guys find in Europe.

Here are some examples of mid-19thc bells that I found on a site last year for comparison.
Great info by Kellam and Fossils above.

    Beautiful bells Antiquarian !
I’m blessed with the rich history here but to be honest this is my only piece of bell in about 2 years of detecting. Would trade a nice coin for one of those bells

Looks like the top of a carriage bell from the 18th C, like the bell on the left of this picture. Not a crotal bell.

Anti Those are great looking items I would be all smiles to have any of them. And in fact I did find one once ,It cleaned up nice but was a little misshapen One morning I decided to put it on my dog and take her for a run ..Well about 3/4 of the way thru i noticed the bell had gotten quiet .And that was because it had come off her collar. So yours are at least 4 times as cool as the one I used to have
