Remember its not the treasures we find or the length of the journey. But the fact that when we are done we can look back at our life and smile with a satisfied feeling that we enjoyed the trip. So always "Keep Swinging And Keep Smiling"

What does the back look like? And how big is it?
My wife does all the driving, I just hold the steering wheel.

Looks like a watch fob from the WWI era.
It may just indicate US patriotic symbolism from that time period as well.

    Nice find,

I couldn't find an example when I searched for watch fobs. For the most part fobs had a rectangular attachment so I am not sure it is a fob. Maybe part of a necklace or other piece of patriotic jewelry?

Now that I've had a second look at this piece, I realize that I've found similar pieces with the same back loop attachment.
I think you're right fyrffytr1, that this might be hair jewelry or some type of decoration other then a watch fob.

I also feel based on the style of the eagle that your is friend's sons find is older then 1900, more likely c1880.
Here are a few of the pieces that I've found for comparison.
