Update..Detector went crazy...what is it? Meteorite? New slice pics
I went to my creek this last weekend with the gold pans and metal detector. I have never gone up there with any equipment before. I started with the detector and 20 feet up the creek my detector went crazy and I found this. I have no idea what it is. It has a smooth texture, weighs 25.3 oz, is 4" x 3", does not look rusty, and is NOT magnetic. It also has a glimmer to it. Can someone help me out? It was found in northwestern PA. Thanks!
Update: I cut a small slice about 1" x .5" ont the bottom. I put a magnifying glass in front of the camera to try to get closer than my macro alone can do. It's hard to see because of the light, but there are silver flecks in it. Does this help? Thanks for everyones input! Chad

this is the second time i said this today. maybe the bang on my head messed me up. i think it is a meteorite like the one in my back yard. find a rock hound to check it. there are also hot rocks that have a lot of metal or mineral. just a shot. Bill
if you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch!

When you say "hot rock", do you mean volcanic ,or just a rock with alot of metal ore? Thanks

Re: Detector went crazy...what is it?
Looks and could be a rock that has "Fools Gold".... your same rock hound should be able to tell you this. I once found a nice piece of Blue Lapis in NC and it had a very nice streak of fools gold through the middle, which made a gorgeous setting for a ring that I know wear.
There were also some nice sized pieces of straight fools gold laying around, talking about thinking you hit it big!!!!

Re: Detector went crazy...what is it? An ore, meteorite, or.........
find someone to cut it in half, that will tell you if it's a meteorite or not

Re: Detector went crazy...what is it? An ore, meteorite, or.........
If it is a meteorite cutting it in half would not change the value of it. Is that right? I thought I saw that in a post on this site. I know that labs have to take a sample of 20g or 20% to test it, so wouldn't cutting in half produce 2 nice pieces and still have a correct classification? Also, where would be the best place to take it to get it cut? Thanks for the help. If you can't tell, I'm pretty new to this. I've been reading alot of posts but until I join, I can't search the topic easily.

you can cut it your self with a diamond blade on a skill saw or find a tile man with a water saw. better. i cut tile, brick, marble'stone on my table saw dry, dirty, dusty and probably not good for the saw but it's cheap. Bill

Can you add keywords to the bottom of this thread (such as meteorite) and then search?
I live in a state of rules where I am not permitted to live on my own country land because my home is not 130 MPH rated! I can only visit it from time to time and pay the fines. I feel so safe with Big Government protecting me. In some states its illegal to collect rainwater.

now I'm leaning towards pyrite, nonmetalic, but will still ring up

Thanks for the reply. I did a streak test and it leaves no color. I'm pretty sure that pyrite streaks greenish-black to brownish-black. I contacted Michael Casper in Ithaca, NY about this. While doing research on possible minerals and meteorites his name was referenced often as a meteorite specialist. Has anyone had any experience with him, or someone else they could suggest?

not sure about streak test, you could try a jeweler that makes jewelery. have them test it

Re: Update..Detector went crazy...what is it? Meteorite? New slice pics
It is hard to tell from your pictures. Most meteorites will cling to a magnet. They are heavier then most rocks. They must have nickel flakes inside. Do a google search for the "Meteorite list" on the net. Since I have been collecting meteorites there have been several new types found that are quite different. There are some meteorites that do have the type structure that yours shows. So you will have to have it checked out by an expert. So do not give up yet.

I forgot to tell you that there is a meteorite form on this list down near the bottom. Good luck

Re: Update..Detector went crazy...what is it? Meteorite? New slice pics
gainking, it does appear to be a metorite which can be worth some good money. The only way to be sure is to check it with a magnet. If a magnet attachs to it, then it's real. No doubt
