What looks like a Viking ship pin is just too thick - what is it?

This measures 3-1/2" long and is quite heavy metal with nice detail. At first glance it appears to be a brooch/pin but it has nothing thin enough to pierce material and hold. If the thinner piece were for a belt buckle, the viking looking ship would be put on sideways and would not be really secure. I am showing the back together and then unassembled. Anyone know what this is or even what period? I have had it awhile but never knew what to even call it or what it could be used for. It has a kind of brass look when shined. Thanks for any help.

It is a Chinese box lock. can't tell you if it old or not. Still being made today to go on different types of Chinese(Asian) furniture from many different Asian countries.

I'm familiar with the box locks but I'm no expert. This one looks interesting and old.
I'm sure someone here on TNet will be able to provide more info but if not, find an asian antiques specialist for an opinion.

yes its a old chinese type jewelry box lock --very nicely made i must say --its possible that it might be quite old -- if found near a wreck site / possible treasure site --- I strongly urge you to look more in that area -- items of great value might be nearby if there was a chest .
