    Need this Axe dated

    Dug this Axe today and would like to know when it might have been made. Thanks for any help.

    It looks like a "felling axe"... Circa late 18th century till today.

    It's shape is standard and may have varied slightly in many ways... for example these are the styles offered by the Belknap Co. in 1937:

    Used for felling small trees and trimming large felled trees.

    IMO you will have to assume a date for it based on other finds and the history of the area.

    looks more virgina type to me see the ears on the bottom and the long downward sweep on the lower bottom edge? -- time frame seems good though --- Ivan

    Looks like you are digging some nice tool relics lately!

    I have found many exactly like yours. Most have been found in sites that date from the 1870's to early 20th century. If I recall, that axe design is a Phila-Jersey Axe, which would make sense based on where we live in relation to each other.
