USMC hat pin, guesses on age and value please

My neighbor knows Im into metal detecting and eBay and things and asked me to check on this item. From what I can tell, this is a US Marine Corps hat pin. I need to find out the approximate date and possibly a value for this pin. I havent been able to locate the same on online (ive only been able to find the ones with rope attached to the anchor). It has a screw on backing (which it is missing). Its about the size of a quarter.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Heres the pic

What kind of pin is it? A screw back or a straight pin type deal?

UPDATE: All the USMC hat pins I see have a rope associated with the anchor, and the North/South Continents look different.

Re: USMC hat pin, guesses on age and value please

Seems to me in the late 1800s through early 1900s The USMC used to wear campaign type hats.
this brass emblem would certainly corespond with the one that was on the crown of that style campaign hat.

They were normally painted flat black to cut down on reflection.
The screw back kept them in place even when the hat was being abused.

Thanks for the responses guys. Its a screw type backing, but the backing is missing. I've been scouring the web all day and cant find any info in this pin. Maybe a hardcore Hoorah marine will chime in with some good info.

Montana Jim: I also noticed that most of the other similar pins have rope attached to the anchor. Weird that this one doesn't.

It is going to be interesting on where this one come from and why. Maybe Civil war.
    ================================================== ================

The history of the Marine Corps emblem is a story related to the history of the Corps itself. The emblem of today traces its roots to the designs and ornaments of early Continental Marines as well as British Royal Marines. The emblem took its present form in 1868. Before that time many devices, ornaments, and distinguishing marks followed one another as official marks of the Corps.

In 1776, the device consisted of a "foul anchor" of silver or pewter. The foul anchor still forms a part of the emblem today. (A foul anchor is an anchor which has one or more turns of the chain around it). Changes were made in 1798, 1821, and 1824. In 1834 it was prescribed that a brass eagle be worn on the hat, the eagle to measure 3 1/2 inches from wingtip to wingtip.

First of all, nice Eagle, Globe and Anchor! These are really fun to date because they have so many clues. Here's a list of some that pertain to yours.

    1. EGA emblems, as know today, date from 1868.

    2. The "SEMPER FIDELIS" banner was made obsolete in 1904.

    3. In 1912 they added longitude lines.

    4. In 1936. 'Droop-winged' emblems were changed back to straight wings and longitude lines were removed.

    5. WWI EGA's had no rope.

    6. In 1963, the emblems were changed to black instead of brown.

I've attached a pic of how my favorite EGA's look.

The screw back mounting would place it in the 1930=40 time period. The details and the way the U.S. and South America are shaped are vague.
Its is suspect to me for some reason. But then again it may be an early version.

Suspect! Correct! South America/North America are not accurate. Maybe the pin was cast prior to the Earths Continental Plates settling down a little.
