Re: Wheat Penny error?
I think it is called a grease filled die. If it is, it isn't that uncommon. If it is something else, you might have something worth big bucks$$$

Re: Wheat Penny error?
Look under die errors. it seems to have caused a shift as it was stamped also.

Re: Wheat Penny error?
it is either extra metal on die- a piece of copper from another penny got pressed onto yours
or, a die chip- where a chunk of die is broken and its absence is shown with extra copper

The magnifying glass mode is great for coins.
Here is a long review that goes over all it has to offer.

Re: Wheat Penny error?
Nice! This appears to be a die chip (cud if found on the rim). Definitely not a grease-filled die ... that would make the '5' disappear. This happens when a piece of the die chips away and the planchet metal fills the void when the coin is struck. Due to the location and size you may want to send it in to one of the grading services for authentification (PCGS, NGC or ANACS). Nice find.

Re: Wheat Penny error?
Thanks dj for the camera info.
My book has it listed as a "clogged 5" error. Its a known error and has some value. How much, I dont know. My book is old (1977) and lists value back then as 40cents.
