    Anyone know what this is?

Hi, I found this in an abandoned estate. There was a hand written sticker on the bottom that said "italian vase" but that has since fallen off. Its 11 inches tall. Its green and white mainly. The bottom has a mark that looks like a 57 written in what looks like silver type ink. Not sure if that means anything. I have searched for weeks and can't find any info. Whatever you can tell me will be great. Thanks

Looks like a tape measure to me but I may be mistaken.

Was there a lid that went on it?

There is no lid that we found. Not sure if its an incense burner cause there is no place to put a candle or anything to heat up the incense.

Well here is a picture of a pair of urns. Your vase is shaped the same and these urns don't have a lid either. Could it be that? And I'm talking about garden urns not the kind for ashes. You would stick a potted plant in it and the holes are for drainage.

Re: Anyone know what this is?

It looks to me like a possible rose vase, though those were fluted and "gathered" on the top. But with the small size of the bowl and the drain holes on the bottom, it could still be that. The time period appears to be what I have in my possession to be late 1800's, possibly 1900. I have some with the same type gold leaf and drawings that my g-gf bought and gave to my gm in about 1905. Pretty thing.

Question: Where do the drain holes drain out?

Tip: Don't scrub it to clean it, or apply harsh cleaners such as 409. Weak soap and water at the most. The gold leaf will come off. Preserve all paintings on it if you can.

The drain holes are directly under the bowl part on top.

But where do they drain to/into?

it appears to be for outside garden use so it simply drains unto the ground---- however if it was used indoors I'm sure a water catch pan of some sort would have been put in place below it to catch any excess water with the base of it resting either within or over the catch pan area.
