I found this clip or buckle quite a while back in a wooded area. The site was part of a horse farm near a house that was used as a hospital during the American Revolution. If you look closely, there is a tab on one side and a slit on the other, as if a piece of cloth or leather would be slipped through. The reverse is identical. At first I thought it looked Victorian, but now I am wondering if it is possibly a bit older. I have never seen a similar one posted. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Just a guess but would say it's the top of a ribbon like this old campaign ribbon. Think someone may have mentioned it above

I think it is a good guess, however the reverse side is identical to the front. My guess is that a campaign ribbon would have a flat back. I also dont see slits for sliding the ribbon. The ribbon is obviously slipped through before being fastened, as in the photo below showing the front and back.
All I can add is; its not like any buckle I have ever seen including all the books.
