Its either an early eagle or an ugly chicken. I looked it up in both Alberts and Troiani, and can't find one that looks like it, although it seems that all of the early eagle buttons, had ugly birds on them. You might have found a new one. It looks like revolutionary war period. That is one really great button. Congratulation...Lance

Hey Lance, my friend said he thought it was a GW Inaugural button. I wish! It looks like one of the pictures in his book of the small varaiety but before I get excited I want to know if its just another fairy tale...

I found it on a church site in Assawoman, Virginia. The church has been gone for 2 centuries. Apparantly the University of the Eastern Shore had a dig there but missed some goodies. Its private property, I got permission and found 3 or 4 buttons and some trinkets...

Gary. I am sorry, I was not looking in the Washington inaugurals. He appears to be right. It appears to be a WI 12 F. If so it should be 18mm and have 37 marks around the border. It also shows that there are only 11 to 25 known. Maybe 26 with yours. You will want to get that confirmed but you may have a find of the year!!!! congrats...Lance
