i was looking at hogges post in todays finds, and it got me thinking about my first old copper.. it has like raised lettering compared to the other KG'S i've found.. the obverse and reverse are raised also.. hope you can see in the pics.. i've always thought it was 1724.. but could be 1774...
think it's a fake ??

Re: counterfiet ?
Clearer pic/scans from directly overhead would help out the most...
That way when Don in SJ attributes it - it's easier!

Re: counterfiet ?
It's neither 1724 or 74 being Geo. II. (1734, 44, 54?) Geo. III counterfits are more common than Geo. II, but of course they do exist. Seems your coin is quite off center, possibly a good indication of a counterfeit.

Not to me, as it would go in the scrap metal bin. However, I'm sure it means alot to the finder

Re: counterfiet ?
Since the finder thinks the last digit is a 4, than it must be a 1734, Young Head KGII Halfpenny. I believe it is Regal, but if weight was given, then that would be the tell all on whether counterfeit or not. I have not studied my KGII Halfpenny's for percentage of counterfeits, but I believe the accepeted amount is 40% or in that area. I believe 2 out of 3 1734 KGII ones I have are counterfeits, based on weight and LOL, one is made of pewter that is rotting away.
