Would the tip of a pencil fit in hole? Maybe part of a pencil sharpener?

Could a cord for a hooded jacket fit through the hole? It would go through and a knot would keep it on the end of the cord. The knot would be hidden inside...maybe?

Could fit, they are usually plastic though.....

Just my $0.02. GL mentioned a cord could be attached which made me think. How about a decoration for a lamp switch (chain pull)? Perhaps Mission/Arts and Crafts period. Is it copper/brass?

I also think it is for the end of a pull chain probably for a lamp or light fixture. Now...what brand? It'd be worth a few $$ if it was say for a Handel, Tiffany, or other high dollar lamp.
