    chinese coin help pics added

over the weekend my dad got a chinese coin that is made with some silver. It is larger than a silver dollar. on 1 side it has a dragon with the words 29th YEAR OF KUANG HSU HU POO on the other side it has 9 chinese characters around the rim with 4 larger chinese charcters in the middle. could use some help on how old the coin is, and whether or not it is a token or currency

    thanks for any help

    Re: chinese coin help

This site (http://www.kenelks.co.uk/chinese/chinesedragon.htm) notes that a number of large silver coins were minted on a trial basis at a weight of one tael at Tianjin (Tientsin) during 1903. They show the weight in Chinese characters, the name of the Minstry of Finance, HU POO and bear the date 29th YEAR OF KUANG HSÜ.

Assuming they contain 25 grams of .900 coin silver, their metallic value would be about $13.50. If I was in your place, I would test to make sure they are not fakes, then buy the whole lot.

chinese fakes are quite common these days and are often quite good looking sadly --the metal content will show if their fake --also check their weights if their not of the correct wieght range --their fakes-- if the weight is right they still might be (the fakers are getting better they know folks wight coins so they used lead cores to give the right weight and feel to the coins) --- if the coins are indeed silver --with $13 bucks of silver per coin and only costing $5 get all you can ---but the "low" price would make me very careful first to check er out before getting more.
