    Unidentifiable Coin

    [img=http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7411/p1010543oi8.th.jpg]http://

    I found this coin today with a bunch of other 19th century coins. I know that it is American and from the year 1857. I could not find any mint markings. It has the seated liberty front common with many coins from the 1800's and is approximately the size of a dime currently in circulation.

    Re: Unidentifiable Coin

    It's what collectors call a "love token"— a coin which has had at least one side smoothed and reengraved with a name or initials, decorative design, etc.

    Nice find!

    ok. Because I could not understand the back. It was either a calligraphic "A" or a roman numeral 5. I wish they hadnt done this on such an old coin

    a seated dime was a nice bit if change back then ( 50 cents to a dollar was a days wages to many folks)-- thus making a love token out of the "valuible coin "--meant in effect --I love you MORE than money .--- by todays standards its kinda like lighting a gals cigarette with a $100 bill .
