old golden round object

This was found last month in a mid 1800s site (inland).

It is very fragile but metal (non magnetic). Could it be a ladies makeup compact?

Any ideas on the symbol?

I agree that it may the cover of a pocket watch. I think it is gold plated. It was buried 10-inches deep and came out looking clean as you see it.

Does anyone have an idea of the period of this design? The diameter is just under 2-inches.

Look inside with a magnafing glass to see if there are any jeweler repair marks. Tony

that is the design used by elgin on their pocket watches 1920's plus or minus 15 years. I've got a watch with the same back, should have some small numbers engraved (by hand) on the inside close to the rim from watchmakers setting the timing and repairs. some have the plating stated in years , such as 15year 10k gold guaranteed case.
