I found this today very near two IH of 1898 and 1904 vintage.
On my Sovereign in rings up at 173 which is the same number as my 10K wedding band.
Initially I thought it was brass. It came out of the hole with a black coating on it.
Pictured it has been cleaned three times with Brasso.
Does it look like gold?
How much does a jeweler charge to test it?
Thanks
Gold & silver testing kits are very cheap, looking into getting one. (about $10)

How do you find Gold coins? Reply: 'By finding lots of Silver ones..'
A real man thinks about detecting every 6 seconds.

We can not understand ourselves unless we understand our HISTORY.

No backmark at all.
I did look at it at work today at 65 times magnification.
You are correct, obviously gold plated.
Oh well, close but no cigar.
Thanks for the help
