I found this coin today. It is just a shade smaller in circumfrance from a US Quarter. It is wafer thin. I'll try to get better pics later but this is the best I could do for now. I know nothing about Roman coins so this may just be wishful thinking on my part. Here is what I see...The Obverse has a figure of what appears to be a male with flowing hair, Olive branch crown, and the clothing appears to be similar to a toga. The reverse of the coin has a picture of a lion. Both sides of the coin have writing that appears to be Latin. Below the lion there appears to be Roman numerals (a date?). I cannot wait for you coin experts to tell me I got something special (it's still special even if it turns out to be nothin') thanks for looking and providing your input. - Joe
Re: I got a coin...I think....Possibly Roman??? Help
EDITED POST - SEE CHANGES FOR THE OBVERSE
Ok I've had 3 of us look at this and here is what we all agree we can read (* = Unknown Letter)
Obverse - LVDXVDG. FRETNAVREX
Reverse around the lion- ****RT(the T may be an E)IS I* VICTVS IN A*MS (* possibly a V)
Reverse below the lion - R.E.( I.F )P
W
I did find a photo (Obverse only) of a Scicilian coin where the portrait were very close and the writing was similar (PHILIP.V.D.G. was where my coin reads LVDIVDG.)
Re: I got a coin...I think....Possibly Roman??? Help
Not roman, looks like a 18th century jetton.

Re: I got a coin...I think....Possibly Roman??? Help
The medal helps - i think we are close. The writing on the left Obverse appears to be a date (the medallion translates to LVDXIIIIDG = 1069 and the coin LVDXVDG = 1070) what is confusing on both dates is the G at the end of each. G is not a numeric letter. I don't think the coin is from that era but commemorates something or someone from that time.
The writing to the right Obverse are matches for both coin and medal. FRETNAVREX (the REX part I believe means KING)
I still have found nothing remotely resembling the writing or picture on the reverse.
after looking further the reverse writing appears to be ***(possibly a 4th*)RT(or E)IS IN VICTVS IN A*MS
the markings under the lion remain as originally posted.
Re: I got a coin...I think....Possibly Roman??? Help
lets see 1069 wasn't that the year the french nobles were just about wiped out by king henry and his men from england? (battle of angincort)--spelling might be off a bit
Re: I got a coin...I think....Possibly Roman??? Help
Ivan / Triki,
I think you guys are on to something. The events certainly seem to fit the what I / we have been able to interpret from the coin so far. The manufacture of the coin though at least from what I know of coins is the is much newer than 1070. Possibly 1600's or 1700's. Then again I may have no clue what I'm talking about.
Re: I got a coin...I think....Possibly Roman??? Help
Here are some clues. I still think jetton but could be a medillion.
LVD XV = Louis XV (15th) was King of France from 1715 to 1774.
D = DEI
G = GRATIA
FRET = ?
NAV = ?
REX = King

Thanks, I believe you are correct. Now that I know what a Jeton is I am starting to find very similar ones on line.
The photos below are the closest in appearance but not close enough to call it a match. The guy advertising it on EBAYS stated it was of German manufacture for a french client. Makes sense to me since I found it in Germany. Thanks again for all the input. Identifying this thing is just as much fun as finding it.
Re: I got a coin...I think....Possibly Roman??? Help
Hi....I think it might be a coin of Leopold1 of Belgum 1831-65, note your picture shows serated dots runing around the coin, this was used so that blind people could tell it was a coin, I don't think you find this on Jettons I might be wrong. How ever I did manage to find a picture of a Silver jetton of Leopold1. Hope this helps a bit

Why? The lettering is all wrong to be Leopold I

I don't know why your cross. I too, am not in the mood for name calling. As I am the first to admit when I am wrong & I am wrong a lot. So if your that bothered, I would prefer you don't reply to me again & I will do the same. Now we have that cleared up I will exaplain my logic:
I was using the same logic as this site (other than I guess FRET was a latin shorthand & it was FR ET): http://www.worldwide-numismatics.com...France%201.htm
This coin's obverse pictures King Louis XVI (b1765-d1793). His bust is encircled by the Latin legend LUD-XVI-D-G FR-ET-NAV-REX
The copied above would imply that his possible jetton is King Louis (LUD) & the XV was the 15th.
See my second post for my best guess.
