4X6 DD or 5.3 for the XLT which is better?

I am thinking of buying a smaller coil for my xlt. Just wondering what
thoughts are out there on which is better for tight trashy areas. The 4X6 DD or the 5.3

    Thank you for your reply.

Re: 4X6 DD or 5.3 for the XLT which is better?

    Joe,

I have the 5.3 coil for my DFX. It works fine, however I probably would have bought a 4X6 DD if they were available when I purchased my detector over 6 years ago. I love the 6X10 DD. A very stable coil in the conditions I detect.

Since the 5.3 works so good in heavy trash I won't bother to get the 4X6 but if someone were to offer to swap coils even up with me I'd probably do it.

Either coil will pinpoint accurately first time every time. The technique is different with a DD. Get the strongest signal left to right, pull the coil slowly straight back & when the signal barely disappears the target will be at the tip of the coil.

Either coil wil do the job for you & from what I've heard the 5.3 has a slight edge on depth. ( Larger surface area so the makes sense to me.)

I totally agree with "Sarge". He hit the nail on the head. Great advice and I
    could not add anything else.

The 4"x6" Blue max coil is not in the same league as the 5.3 on the XLT. The only advantage on the XLT is target separation on shallow targets and extreme mineralization. The 350 Snooper is better than the 4"x6" Blue max in almost every catagory on the 6.59kHz detectors IMHO. Go concentric on the XLT. On the DFX MXT M6 there could be more debate on 4"x6" DD vs the 5.3 Concentric. Just my 2 cents. HH Bill

I use the 5.3 Black Max on my XLT and like it very much.

For the DFX the elliptical coils will handle the higher settings in mineralized soils better than the concentric coils.
The same is not true for the XLT specific coils. If you want a coil for very trashy areas, go with the Blue Max 350. For tot lots and parks or less trashy areas, the Black Max 5.3 is great. The Royal 800 loses far too much depth with not much gain in maneuverability over the 950 coil. The Maxima 1500 is suitable for finding large metal items deeper than the 950 will reach, but is pretty much worthless for coin sized objects. Even if you find a coin (I have) it is really tough to pinpoint with that coil (really, really tough).

    Hope this helps.

I like the 4x6 DD - it's got that flatter search pattern making it
easier to separate trash than a cone-shaped pattern you get with
a round coil. It's also very light, and allowed me to search
longer without fatigue, but never used the 5.3 inch, so
    cannot compare them.
