    MXT pinpointing trouble

    Howdy folks,

I'm running an MXT with the stock 950 coil. Every so often when I'm trying to pinpoint a target, I'll pull the trigger back but I won't get any sort of a tone. My settings are Coin & Jewelry, Gain at preset, Disc can vary between 3 & 5, Threshold just audible, Trac in the ground position. Battery charge between +9 and +11.

When I find a target that I want to pinpoint, I'll move the coil off target about a full coil width then pull the trigger. Most times it works just fine, once in a while it's quiet and is driving me bonkers.

The detector is only about a year old and I've been having this trouble since I bought it.

Does anyone else have this problem or a solution?

Thanks in advance for any help and best of luck to all,
    nullers

    Re: MXT pinpointing trouble

I have that issue once in a while, not sure why though. When it happens I raise the coil a foot or two to the side, pull the trigger and swoop over the target from the side and seems to work fine. When it has happened it was when I was barely moving the coil over the target very slow, pulled the trigger and all went quiet. It's never bothered me though. Just figured it was an electronics, magnetic? thing and kept going.

    Re: MXT pinpointing trouble

I have seen that in my MXT also - It seems to catch up after a couple tries.

I have a theory that it's junk which is sensitive to orientation, so I try it again
at 90 degrees, and can usually pick it up again. By that I mean, if I'm facing North
when I scan, I move around the target and now face it from the West, or East.

I cannot tell if the target is the problem, or perhaps it takes the oscillator
longer to kick in after you press the trigger.

    Re: MXT pinpointing trouble

If you're too close to the target when you pull the trigger, it sets that depth as 12". The coil needs to be clear of a target when you pull the trigger. Also, if you release and pull the trigger quickly, it reduces the sensitivity of the PP mode until you release the trigger for a few seconds. I'm still a newbie at this, but I'm pretty sure about this.

Sounds like you're right over the target when you pull the trigger and it nulls out. Try moving away from where the target center is and then pull the trigger and X the target, this should work for you. Good luck

I've notis that too.But just worked around it.but i think it has to do with the hallo the object in the ground has.

I agree, if you pull the trigger while right over the target it it nulls it out. Target needs to out of the coil. Think it might mention that in the manual.

    Re: MXT pinpointing trouble

It's possible that when you moved off to one side of the target to pull the PP trigger, that you ended up on top of a discriminated trash item, which would have then detuned the pinpointing circuit. I've learned to only pull the trigger when I have can hear my threshold, never when it nulls out.

Why don't you just lift the coil up to at least waist high before you hit the trigger.
