I usually stay in coin/jewelry mode, but this week realized I could find things in relic mode. I've even tried propecting mode. My question is: After you hunt a yard in say coin/jewl, do you then re-hunt the yard in relic, and then again in prospecting, just to get different readings/targets. I like coin shooting, but found some excitement with a couple colonial(?) musket balls. For the most part I think junk from 150 yrs ago...is still junk. But, I haven't hunted a CW battlefield yet.
Also, instead of hunting a beach on coin/jewl, would you try it on prospecting mode to find gold rings? As you can see, although I've had the MXT for a year, I'm still learning.

I don't use the prospecting mode at all. Maybe when I get a chance to go prospecting or meteorite hunting I will use it. Other than Xing out a target there is no pinpoint function and as far as finding gold, it is designed to find natural gold. When I started with the MXT I used Relic mode all the time but did not care for the iron grunt noise even though it is helpful in a tough spot. I found myself flipping the trigger forward to get rid of it but that is pretty much the same as the regular coin and jewelry mode, so, unless I am seeking out an old spot, home site etc. I always use C&J mode.

Well I think I learned something in reading the manual on the new machine, v3.

Prospecting mode accepts VDI values from -20 to +95. Now this is acceptable to know, but I wish it was in the MXT manual somewhere what values to look for in detecting gold. Trial by fire!
The small numbers and negative indicate small gold, but also trash. I have heard of folks finding nuggets that were 0 or negative VDI. I wonder how much gold was passed up on that fact alone. A good VDI is 24 or higher and you can see if the target did not give a good VDI, it could have been mistaken for iron. Remember that if you go prospecting or are in an area that small gold items can be found. Here is one advantage for the new v3 in being able to further evaluate a target with a three frequency check.
For us MXT owners, it is confirmation of what targets while prospecting should be looked into.
