Don't worry about depth quite yet, start out with factory programs just increase sens.
Preamp Gain at 3
AC around 65-75 is usually good. (what ever is stable)
When much iron is around use Correlate, also helps when in much interference.
Geologists are gneiss, tuff, and a little wacke.

Hello from Lenoir City, Tn. I just got a DFX 300 myself and have been having a ball with it. You have a White's dealer right there and he is very helpful. I go to him a lot and he is a member of the metal detecting club too. Maybe we can get together sometime and take the machines out and give them a good workout. I have been hunting a lot in Blount, Knox and Loudon counties.

While I think of it here are some tips:
Start out using C&J mode (coin and jewellery)
VCO on
Tone ID on
DC Phase on (gives you a 15kHz none normalized VDI reading when pinpointing)
Focus on the Signagraph it shows much more info of the target then the VDI number but also can show other close by targets.
Use VDI to back up the decision to dig.
Maybe I'll write up more later,
Eu

I have had mine for two months now, I usually just use the coin and Jewly setting until i learn the rest, but when you pin point hold the trigger and go slow and you will hit your target perfect!!

I had the XLT and the DFX but liked the MXT best of all now on the Garrett GTI 2500 i would say it is deeper than all the Whites i had a GTI 2500 my brother has it now i have the GTI 1500 the GTI 2500 has that .. All Metal Deepseeking Mode... that makes it go deeper than a DFX..XLT or the one i like the MXT............
THAT'S RIGHT I DID IT SO WHAT , CRY TWO TEARS IN A BUCKET , FACE IT , LET'S TAKE IT TO THE STAGE....---LET NO ONE KNOW WHAT WHERE OR WHEN -----

Depends on the object, settings, ground conditions and so on.
In my area it is the other way around. All metal mode gives about another 3-4 inches, in air with the GTI.
The DFX also offers mixed mode which makes it very close depth wise, maybe 1 or 2 inches less at best.
In my trails with both they where very close depth wise. So it really comes down to personal preference .
