I have never used the XLT and have not been able to use my MXT as much as I'd like. You didn't mention it specifically in your post but if nugget shooting is in your future I'd suggest the MXT.
Also, I know the MXT has many accessory coils that fit it. Don't know about the XLT. Something to consider though.
The XLT has been around for quite some time. I don't believe it would have hung around as long as it has if it weren't a damn fine detector.
Good luck on your decision. But you're asking a difficult question to answer. Which is best? The best answer I could give you would be that each one will out perform the other in certain situations.

I like Whites detectors. I used to have the Classic 3 but sold it a couple years back. I too had to make the agonzing decision of what upgrade I wanted: MXT or M6. Whites MXT is probably one of the top five detectors and will be my next detector. It has very little learning curve. The XLT is a different matter, I've heard. But if your a real hands on person who likes to tweak this and that XLT might be your thing. I prefer the turn and go. Good luck!

Re: MXT VS XLT// which is one is really the best. HELP is requested!!!

A lot of folks sell their MXT's and XLT's for various reasons so neither is the best for every situation. I haven't even tried an MXT but have an M6 and the XLT ,also have an IDX Pro, Eagle Spectrum and had a DFX and 6000 DI Pro SL.

There are folks for various reasons that swear anyone of these detectors are fantastic and the best there is or was from Whites and others would vehemently disagree.

The XLT is a long term proven performer as (slow sweeper) mentioned and i ain't getting rid of mine soon because i love the way it covers ground quickly due to the 4 filter design (Moderate to Fast Sweep) and with the correct program and facet settings has the ability to get some deep targets. If one is willing to put some effort into learning the XLT and it's program options it could be a valuable asset to the arsenal.

As stated i haven't used an MXT but have the M6 and thoroughly enjoy it which is a derivative of the MXT and is more a moderate to slow sweep detector along with a higher operating frequency (MXT-M6) =14 Khz ,XLT = 6.59 Khz .The MXT- M6 are more sensitive to smaller objects and will hit deeper on small pieces of foil or jewelry and thinner relics the XLT may ignore. The XLT is great on coin sized targets and excellent around fresh water. The coil selection is better on the MXT but not bad on the XLT.

If your planning on prospecting gold nuggets and small gold jewelry or a very serious relic hunter the MXT would definately be better than the XLT but for general coin, relic and jewelry hunting the XLT has many more options and easily tamed in harsh conditions.

Sorry to be so long and just tried to convey a few thoughts on the differences based on my experience with the M6 vs XLT and what i've read on numerous forum posts about the MXT. HH Bill

Purched a mxt about three months ago. Great machine, easy learning curve. Have been a garrett fan for years but this machine seems to be more balanced also. FOUND A 1963 DIME AT SEVEN INCHES,was impressed.

The XLT is more versatile as it has more control . Adjustment is wide ranging. The MXT is a deep detector that is easier to set up and can be used for coin hunting but is better for gold and relics than the XLT. If you need more help let me know. I'll be glad to do it for you.

Old topic but I'm sure there are others still in this situation. People are commenting the depth you get with the MXT, but you can also get great depth with the XLT. I'm still a novice, but even when I first got into it I somehow managed a large cent at the 12" mark. It was an extremely weak signal, but I dug, and dug, and dug till I found it ^_^ I thought I was going to find a metal pipe after a while.

I used to have a XLT but know I use the MXT. The MXT is a little noisy and takes some time getting used to. It is easy to start up and you can adjust it on the spot. There are more coils to chose from too.

I started with a M.X.T. and went to a X.L.T.which is a great machine but complex if you really want to get its full potential,I also did not like the difference in the mixed mode between the two(liked the M.X.T. M.M. better)so I sold the X.L.T and got another M.X.T(M.X.T. kicks butt on gold too)
    M.X.T , Tesoro Tejon 4"& 2.5" dredge with a little luck!!

If you want to program your machine to fine tune it and take time out while hunting to adjust a setting then rebalance it before you start hunting again then go for the XLT. There are alot of books out there to aid in hunting for specfic items on the XLT also. If you want to turn on your detector and balance it then go hunting and adjust settings on the move go for the MXT. I have used both and have the MXT now. It is very easy to turn a knob to adjust a setting. It will give you a little more depth with the standard 950 coil. The XLT is not as fast on target recovery than the MXT but the display gives you a little more specific information allowing you to cherry pick targets easier. Your batteries will last longer with the MXT especially when using headphones too.

In the end its six of one half dozen of the other. The MXT may have a slight edge in depth, but it aint much. My friend uses one and he cant hit anything my XLT wont get.

If you like simple, turn a knob and go operation, then get the MXT. If you want a wealth of data at your fingertips and near limitless control, get the XLT.
You'll get it all. Or you won't
Someone else will get it. Or they won't
Someday, you'll die and leave it behind.
    Act accordingly.
